WHAT do you do when a volcanic ash cloud stops you from heading to Bali to attend your friend’s wedding? You make an appearance anyway.A group from Newcastle, who had to abandon their plans to attend a wedding in Bali on Sunday, got dressed up in their best formal wear at a house at Redhead instead, where they linked up via video with the ceremony and guests stranded in two other Australian cities. The group, which included groomsman Brendon Idec and master of ceremonies Steve Cooper, were devastated after their flights to Indonesia were twice cancelled during the week due to the Mount Raung ash cloud.

They had hoped to spend Sunday celebrating the wedding of close friends Kieran Ham and Lauren Cunningham on the popular tourist island, but like so many others were left stranded at the airport.Others that were unable to make the wedding due to flights being cancelled included both the bride and groom’s parents. But, determined to make the best of the situation, the bride’s family organised a group video call for guests stuck in Newcastle, the Central Coast and Adelaide.

It allowed the group at Redhead, huddled around a heater, to watch the ceremony in balmy Bali, where the guests were cooled with fans and portable airconditioning units.See your ad hereThe group huddled around the television and Mr Idec even posed for a photo at the end, standing next to the TV and on the end of the line of groomsman.

And after they finished video calling the wedding, they video called the reception.”The eight of us from Newcastle who didn’t get on the plane planned on having a party anyway so we could dress up and enjoy the moment together,” Mr Cooper said.”But with Skype and the access to technology, we thought we would make more of a party out of it.”It was really bittersweet really, we could see the wedding taking place and all these people we love and we should be there. But it was also the best way to make something good out of a bad situation. We were really looking forward to sharing the day with one of our best mates for his wedding, but this kind of makes up for it in a small way.”They appreciated that we made the effort and we were able to show that we all love them regardless of the fact we weren’t all together.”
