It might have been the wedding of their dreams. Amidst much fanfare, four couples from underprivileged families tied the knot at a mass wedding organised by the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation at the Ananthapuri auditorium in Jagathy on Tuesday.
The weddings were conducted in all pomp and splendour with nearly 1,500 persons gathering to witness the event.
The brides were selected from among those registered with the Corporation through the Kudumbasree for its ‘Mangalya Sahayi’ project. They were selected from the four Community Development Societies (CDS). Members of CDSs and nearly 5,000 ‘ayalkootams’ (neighbourhood groups) pitched in with Rs.50 each to amass Rs.10.61 lakh for the wedding.
The ceremony commenced with Mayor K. Chandrika welcoming the bridegrooms to the venue by 10 a.m.
Ajay Kumar of Kattakada and R. Sunitha of Punchakari were the first to tie the knot. The couple also exchanged rings and garlands. Later, the marriages of R. Harikumar of Malayinkeezhu with L. Karthika of Poojappura; Ani of Balaramapuram with Priya of Kowdiar; and S. Shaji of Vattappara with V. Lekha of Kattaikonam were solemnised.
Former Speaker M. Vijayakumar, V. Sivankutty, MLA, and Corporation councillors were present to bless the couples.
Financial aid
As part of the welfare scheme of the Corporation, Rs.2 lakh each was deposited as fixed deposits in the name of each couple besides presenting them with five sovereigns of gold ornaments.
The ceremony came to an end with a sumptuous feast to all present.
Social Justice Minister M.K. Muneer conveyed his greetings to the couples.
